Thumbs up from ‘Mother Hen’

I don’t say this lightly, but I’m very proud of the Powerade team and what they have achieved so far. Sometimes I feel like a wee mother hen fussing over a brood of chicks, but all three are listening to what I am telling them and crucially, putting it into action.

Angeline is flying. She is a working on a more advanced programme than the two guys, as luckily she has been free of injuries since the very start. The great thing is that she is texting me after each run and I can tell that she is enjoying it, which is good to see.

I’m still a bit worried about Trevor’s calves, so I am not pushing him too hard just yet. He is so used to taking on challenges in different sports and completing them, so we both know that he will do this, but I have to ease him back a little for now.

Reg has been absolutely fantastic! This is harder for him than the other two because of his build, plus the fact that he got injured early on. He is way out of his comfort zone, but he has lost weight, he is toning up and most encouragingly, he’s really starting to put the miles in.

That’s what it is all about for now - getting those miles in the legs. The ‘Never Give Up’ team has much done, but there is a lot more to do!

Early Challenges

It is only a few weeks old, but I think both Reg and Trevor are beginning to realise why Powerade called this challenge ‘Never Give Up’!

Injuries are part and parcel of running and both of the lads have been forced to rest up for a short while. It is frustrating, but from speaking with them both, they are determined to get the mileage back up again as soon as possible. That’s good to hear.

Angeline is flying. I have given her the green light for the Omagh Half Marathon this Saturday (March 21st). Just like the Swiss Alpine Challenge in July, this is all about finishing the race and I have no doubt that she will do it.

She might have to walk some of it, but some of the top marathon runners in the world have stopped to walk at some stage. The key is to keep going and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

From what I have seen, I have no doubt that Angeline, Reg and Trevor all have that ‘Never Give Up’ mentality. It is just a matter of harnessing it over the next few months for the big race.

It will be tough, but I know they can do it.

week-1

Week 1

There is a lot of work ahead, but I really feel that Reg, Angeline and Trevor will be ready for this challenge in July.

One of the most important attributes a runner must have is a positive mental attitude. I don’t think I have come across three more enthusiastic people in my life! The trio have hardly been able to sit still since they got the news from Powerade and their enthusiasm is infectious.

As for the training itself, Angeline and Trevor are well into their individual programmes at this stage, while Reg is just starting his as he was away at his brother’s wedding in India. He is throwing himself into his running in a bid to catch up.

To be honest, I am still not sure that any of them fully realise how challenging this task is. There are plenty of smiles at the moment and they will need to keep those spirits up. I can guide them, but I can’t do the work for them.

I can say this to them, though. The pain and effort will be worth it when they cross that finish line
